Weekend in Jeju

Weekend in Jeju

Trip Overview

Jeju has three UNESCO designations on one island. Most weekenders only find two, this itinerary covers all of them without the rushed feeling. Day one anchors in Jeju City, working outward to Manjanggul's cathedral lava chambers and Jusangjeolli's basalt cliffs. Day two swings east for Seongsan at dawn, then west to black sand beaches and green tea fields. The pace is moderate, enough ground to feel satisfied, enough space to enjoy it. Rent a car. Public buses cover the routes, but they'll cost you two hours you don't have on a weekend. Weather shifts fast on Jeju, so pack a light layer regardless of the forecast. The itinerary works in any season but shines hardest in spring (cherry blossoms) and autumn (golden pampas grass fields).

Pace
Moderate
Daily Budget
$100-150 per day
Best Seasons
April, May (spring blossoms) and September, November (autumn foliage and pampas grass). Summer is crowded, worth it if you don't mind the heat. Winter is quiet, with snow on Hallasan some years.
Ideal For
Couples, Solo travelers, Nature lovers, First-time Jeju visitors, Food ensoiasts

Lava Tubes, Cliffs & the East Coast

Jeju City & Eastern Jeju
Start inside one of the world's longest lava tubes. The coast heads south from there, basalt cliffs, a haenyeo seafood lunch, and Jeju City's old market district by night.
Morning
Manjanggul Lava Tube
Manjanggul is a UNESCO-listed lava tube stretching over 13 km, one of the longest in the world. The 1 km lit section delivers cathedral chambers, frozen lava falls, and a well-known seven-metre lava column at the far end. Arrive before 10am. Tour groups arrive by mid-morning. The temperature inside is a constant 11, 13°C year-round, so bring a jacket regardless of what the weather is doing above ground.
1.5, 2 hours $4
Lunch
Haenyeo Restaurant Row near Hamdeok Beach, order jeonbok juk (abalone porridge) or raw sea urchin (성게미역국) caught that morning by the island's women divers. Don't skip it.
Traditional Jeju seafood
Afternoon
Jusangjeolli Cliff & Seogwipo Waterfront
Drive south to Seogwipo and walk to Jusangjeolli, where well hexagonal basalt columns stack like organ pipes into the sea. Best in afternoon light. Cheonjiyeon Waterfall is 10 minutes away, a three-tiered falls dropping into a jade pool ringed by subtropical forest. Together, these are the most visually impressive two hours on Jeju.
2.5, 3 hours $3 combined entry
Evening
Dongmun Traditional Market & Jeju City night scene
Return to Jeju City and lose an hour in Dongmun Market. Graze on heuk dwaeji (black pork) skewers, hallabong orange juice, and Korean pancakes, then dinner. Book a table on Heuk Dwaeji Street (흑돼지거리). Black pork is Jeju's signature dish, and the quality here is far better than what you'll find on the mainland. The Chilseong-ro pedestrian street nearby has good craft beer bars.

Where to Stay Tonight

Jeju City (제주시) (Boutique hotel or well-reviewed guesthouse near the old town or airport corridor, Hotel Jeju Air, Artvill, or a Naver-rated guesthouse around Iho Beach)

Jeju City is the transport hub. Staying here on night one keeps you close to the airport, the market, and well-positioned for the day-two westward drive.

At Manjanggul, the exit drops you 1 km from the entrance. Walk back on the forest path, not the road, it is quieter, and the crowds thin fast.
Day 1 Budget: $95, 130 (transport $20, entry fees $7, lunch $20, dinner $30, accommodation $30, 55)
2

Sunrise Peak, Beaches & the West

Eastern & Western Jeju
Start at Seongsan Ilchulbong at dawn, Jeju's most well-known view, earned on 600 steps. The afternoon crosses west to Hyeopjae's black sand beach and Osulloc's green tea fields, ending with dinner in Seogwipo.
Morning
Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak)
This 182-metre tuff cone rising from the sea is Jeju's most recognisable landmark and a UNESCO site. Climb 600 steps in 30 minutes to reach a volcanic crater bowl above and a full coastline panorama below. Come at dawn. The namesake sunrise is one of the best in Korea, arrive by 8am if you'd rather skip the crowds. Haenyeo dive demonstrations happen on the rocks below the peak from late morning.
1.5, 2 hours $3
No booking needed. But arrive 30 minutes before sunrise if you want the peak experience, check the sunrise time for your travel date.
Lunch
Jeju Haenyeo Village Restaurant (성산 해녀의집) near the base of Seongsan, small seafood spots run by actual haenyeo. Order the seafood stew (해물탕) or the raw fish platter. It is the best Jeju food experience on the island.
Haenyeo-caught seafood
Afternoon
Hyeopjae Beach & Osulloc Tea Museum
Drive 90 minutes west to Hyeopjae, shallow, turquoise, backed by white sand and pine trees, with Biyangdo islet floating offshore. One of Jeju's best beaches. It is swimmable May through October. Then head 20 minutes inland to Osulloc Tea Museum, set inside Korea's largest green tea plantation. The rolling emerald fields are worth visiting year-round, and the in-house café does matcha soft-serve and hot osulloc green tea worth stopping for even if you skip the museum.
3 hours total $0 for beach; $0 museum entry (café purchases optional ~$6)
Evening
Farewell dinner in Seogwipo
End the trip in Seogwipo, Jeju's second city, and its most charming. Excellent restaurants line the waterfront Chilseong-ro area. Try Okdom (옥돔, grilled Jeju red tilefish) if the budget allows, or dolsot bibimbap if you're keeping costs down. The Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market runs evenings with street food stalls worth a final browse. For a nightcap with a view, rooftop bars near Seogwipo Port look straight out over the southern sea.

Where to Stay Tonight

Seogwipo or near Jeju Airport (if flying out next morning) (Seogwipo boutique pension for atmosphere, or airport-area hotel (Hotel Sunshine, Ramada by Wyndham) for early departure convenience)

Seogwipo rewards an overnight stay, it is quieter and more characterful than Jeju City. Early flight? The airport drive is 40 minutes. Factor it in.

Jeju Olle Trail segments 1 and 2 connect Seongsan to the haenyeo village on foot, about 15 km total. If you have energy after the peak, walk 30 minutes of the trail. The coastline at that pace is something no car can match.
Day 2 Budget: $100, 140 (transport/fuel $25, entry fees $3, lunch $25, café $6, dinner $30, accommodation $35, 55)

Practical Information

Everything you need to know before you go

Getting Around
Rent a car. It is the single best decision you'll make for a Jeju itinerary. KAL, Lotte, and SK all have desks at Jeju International Airport; a small automatic runs $35, 55/day with basic insurance. Jeju's roads are signed in English and Korean, and parking at most attractions is free or under $2. Taxis in Jeju City are metered and honest, and buses run the coastal ring road (Line 702) reliably, but add 45, 90 minutes to every trip versus driving yourself.
Book Ahead
Black pork restaurants on Heuk Dwaeji Street fill fast on Friday and Saturday evenings. Book 1, 2 days ahead via Naver or your hotel concierge. Jeju hotels in peak season (May, October) sell out weeks ahead. Book accommodation before you land. Everything else, Manjanggul, Seongsan, Osulloc, is walk-up.
Packing Essentials
Light jacket (11°C inside Manjanggul, year-round), good walking shoes for Seongsan's 600 steps and any Olle Trail sections, sunscreen (coastal UV hits hard May, September), a reusable bag for market grazing, T-money card or cash for buses and small vendors.
Total Budget
$195, 270 for two days excluding flights (transport/fuel $45, 55, entry fees $10, meals $100, 120, accommodation $65, 110)

Customize Your Trip

Adapt this itinerary to your travel style

Budget Version
Cut accommodation costs by staying in jjimjilbang (Korean sauna-bathhouses) at around $12/night, or Jeju City guesthouses from $20. Swap the haenyeo lunch for convenience store kimbap and a Jeju tangerine from a roadside stall. Hyeopjae Beach, most Olle Trail sections, and Seogwipo's waterfront are all free. Total budget drops to $80, 100/day.
Luxury Upgrade
Upgrade to a Jeju villa or a resort like Lotte Hotel Jeju or The Shilla Jeju, both have impressive ocean views and pools. Add a private haenyeo experience where a diver guides you snorkeling alongside her. Book a chef's table omakase featuring Jeju abalone and black pork. A helicopter flight over Hallasan runs around $80/person from Jeju City heliport.
Family-Friendly
Swap Manjanggul for the nearby Gimnyeong Maze Park, far more engaging for young children. The Jeju Museum of Art and Jeju Folklore and Natural History Museum cover the rainy-day problem well. Hyeopjae Beach is good for families, shallow, calm, and lifeguarded in summer. Teddy Bear Museum near Jungmun Resort is pure kitsch. Kids love it.
