Jeju - When to Visit

When to Visit Jeju

Climate guide & best times to travel

Jeju Island sits off the southern coast of South Korea and experiences a humid subtropical climate that's notably milder than the mainland. You'll find four distinct seasons here, though they're gentler than what you'd experience in Seoul or Busan. The island stays relatively humid year-round at around 70%, which is something to keep in mind when packing. Winters are cool rather than frigid (typically 3-7°C), while summers are warm and humid (around 26-30°C), with the monsoon season bringing substantial rainfall from June through September. The shoulder seasons—spring and autumn—tend to be the most pleasant times to visit, with comfortable temperatures and manageable rainfall. That said, Jeju is actually quite popular with domestic tourists year-round, so you'll rarely have the island completely to yourself. The island's famous for its microclimates too, meaning Hallasan Mountain can be significantly cooler and windier than the coastal areas, sometimes even when the beaches are perfectly sunny.

Best Time to Visit

Beach & Relaxation
July and August offer the warmest ocean temperatures (23-26°C), though you'll be sharing the beaches with peak crowds and dealing with occasional typhoons.
Cultural Exploration
April-May and October-November provide comfortable walking weather for temples and folk villages, with spring bringing canola flower blooms and autumn offering stunning fall colors around Hallasan.
Adventure & Hiking
September through November is ideal for tackling Hallasan and the Olle trails, with cooler temperatures, clearer skies after the monsoon, and beautiful autumn foliage by late October.
Budget Travel
January through March sees fewer tourists and lower accommodation prices, though you'll need to pack warmer layers and some beaches won't be swimmable.

What to Pack

Year-Round Essentials

Comfortable walking shoes
Jeju is all about outdoor exploration, from Olle trails to lava tube caves, and you'll be doing a lot of walking on varied terrain.
Light rain jacket or packable umbrella
Rain can pop up any month of the year, and you'll want something waterproof that doesn't take up much space.
Sunscreen and sun hat
The UV index can be surprisingly high even on cloudy days, especially near the coast and at higher elevations.
Reusable water bottle
Staying hydrated while hiking is crucial, and Jeju has plenty of places to refill rather than buying plastic bottles.
Daypack or small backpack
Essential for day trips to carry layers, water, snacks, and any souvenirs you pick up at local markets.
Portable charger
You'll be using your phone constantly for photos, maps, and translation apps, and outlets aren't always convenient.

Clothing
Light sweater or cardigan, Long pants and shorts, Light jacket for evenings, T-shirts and breathable tops
Footwear

Footwear
Sandals for the beach and breathable sneakers for walking

Footwear
Insulated, waterproof boots with good traction for potentially icy conditions

Adapter Note
Most travelers will need an adapter unless coming from Europe; North American and UK devices require both an adapter and should verify voltage compatibility.
